Article 40: Urbanization, Stream Buffers and Stewardship in Maryland

ثبت نشده
چکیده

The stream buffer is the region immediately be yond the banks of a stream that serves to limit the entrance of sediment, pollutants, and nutrients to the stream itself. When forested, a stream buffer promotes bank stability and serves as a major control of water temperature (Leopold, 1997). From a biological perspective, the importance of a healthy, intact riparian zone has only been understood for the last 20 years (Rapp, 1997).

Land use impacts on surface water quality by statistical approaches

Surface waters are the most important economic resource for humans which provide water for agricultural, industrial and anthropogenic activities. Surface water quality plays vital role in protecting aquatic ecosystems. Unplanned urbanization, intense agricultural activities and deforestation are positively associated with carbon, nitrogen and phosphorous related water quality parameters. Multip...

Impacts of urbanization on stream habitat and fish across multiple spatial scales.

We analyzed the relation of the amount and spatial pattern of land cover with stream fish communities, in-stream habitat, and baseflow in 47 small southeastern Wisconsin, USA, watersheds encompassing a gradient of predominantly agricultural to predominantly urban land uses. The amount of connected impervious surface in the watershed was the best measure of urbanization for predicting fish densi...
